Mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) have been recognized as promising precursors for carbon materials of high performance such as high density carbon, column packing materials, super active carbon, and electrode materials of lithium battery anodes. Also, it is well known that aromatic hydrocarbons such as coal-tar pitch, petroleum pitch can gradually transform into mesophase during liquid phase process. In the present study, the MCMB were prepared from petroleum-based mesophase pitch and the characteristics of the MCMB were studied. Optical textures of the MCMB were characterized polarized-light microscopy. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze the MCMB. |
