As the unique shear-piezoelectric behavior exhibited by PLLA arises from its genuine chiral molecular conformation, some researchers have focused their attention towards studying the piezoelectric behavior of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) as a substitute for conventional inorganic and polymeric piezoelectric materials. In our most recent study (Mater. Lett., 2015, 148, 58), electrospun PLLA nanofiber web based sensors were studied for their shear-piezoelectric behavior as a function of varying nanoweb stacking arrangements as well as electrode architectures. In the present study, various PLLA woven fabrics and electrospun PLLA nanofiber web embedded in the mattress are investigated as piezoelectric sensor for sleep pattern monitoring as a function of varying sensor arrangements, shapes, sizes, and electrode architectures (with or without silicone encapsulation).
