제목 Stretchable and flexible Au nanoparticles embedded fiber electrode with low bending stiffness for long-term neural circuits
초록 The developed flexible neural probes succeeded in measuring nerve signals for a long time compared to the existing silicon neural probes, and it was confirmed that a low immune response was caused even compared to commercialized probes. However, they still caused brain damage due to their much higher mechanical stiffness and thicker size (> 100 μm) than the brain, which limits the measurable period. Herein, we fabricated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded in polyurethane (PU) based stretchable fiber electrodes for thin-walled neural probes with low mechanical stiffness. The proposed fiber electrode is simply fabricated by immersing polymer fibers into metal precursor chemical solutions. The AuNPs based fiber electrode had good conductivity like AgNPs, and the change in resistance is low during mechanical deformation. In terms of adaptability in various biological environment, we confirmed that more than 90% of the cells were alive in the fabricated fiber electrodes through the stem cell viability test. For the application of biosensors, a brain chip for measuring nerve signals was developed using AuNPs based fiber probes. The developed device was inserted into the brain of mouse to perform a brain nerve signal measurement, and the results were similar to nerve signals measured using conventional probes. The proposed devices have potential to improve the body interface functions that can be applied for a long-term without interfering with the activity of the human body.
