Flexible polyurethane foam from carbon dioxide-based polyether carbonate polyols with reduced generation of volatile organic compound |

The usage of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a feedstock in chemical synthesis is attractive. In this study, the preparation of flexible polyurethane (PU) foams with CO2-based polyether carbonate (PEC) polyols was carried out. Mechanical properties, thermal stability and generation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the PU foams were investigated. Due to relatively rigid carbonate linkage, more rigid PU foam was obtained with higher content of PEC polyol. PU foams with the PEC polyols afforded relatively lower amounts of ash residue. The generation of acetaldehyde, one of the most important VOC, from the PU foams with the PEC polyols was significantly suppressed due to relatively stable carbonate linkage in terms of thermal oxidative degradation. |
