Highly crosslinked poly(AAm-co-DVB) microspheres with various concentrations of DVB are prepared by the precipitation polymerization in acetonitrile or acetonitrile/water mixture media, and the characteristics of the microspheres are investigated. The number-average particle diameter and yield of polymerization increased from 1.19 to 1.52 mm and from 56.2 to 68.7%, respectively, while the coefficient of variation decreased from 16 to 5.5 % for the addition of 20 to 75 mol % of DVB. By increasing DVB from 20 to 75 mol.%, the measured specific surface area decreased from 5.87 to 4.32 m2/g and the surface smoothness improved. The thermal stability, dramatically enhanced with the DVB content due to the high degree of crosslinking. In addition, as the acetonitrile to water ratio varied from 5:1, 7:1, and 9:1, the average particle size, and the specific surface area decreased. |
