Electrochemical hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane was studied over carbon supported Pt-based catalysts, e.g., Pt/C, PtRh/C, PtPd/C, PtRu/C and PtNi/C, which were prepared from chemical reduction of the respective metal precursors onto the carbon particle in a solvent followed by a freeze-drying method. We employed a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell for the electrochemical performance and hydrogenation activity. The PtRh/C catalyst showed the best performance for the current vs. voltage (I-V) curve of the fuel cell characteristics with H2-O2 gases and for the hydrogen transfer rate with H2-N2 gases as well as for the electrochemical hydrogenation of the benzene to the cyclohexane with H2-benzene system. |
