As to the commercially available RO membranes for desalination, the polyamide (PA) based membranes have been widely used so far. However, they still have several limitations, such as low permeability, bio-fouling. In this work, we propose new types of polyelectrolyte-membranes which can overcome the aforementioned problems in PA based RO membranes. The membranes were designed by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method using various polyelectrolytes, including poly(allylamine hydrochloride)(PAH), poly(acrylic acid)(PAA), functionalyzed polymer, etc. The thickness of individual and total layers were adjusted by pH condition and number of deposition steps, respectively. The resulting multi-layered membranes were covalently crosslinked by heat for the good durability of membranes. The detailed morphologies of multi-layered membranes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The salt rejection was monitored by electric conductivity. |
