A novel method to control pretilt angle using LC/photocurable monomer system |

We investigated a novel method to control pretilt angle of liquid crystal(LC) using a phase separation technique of LC/photocurable monomer system by UV irradiation. Pretilt angle was adjusted by changing the weight ratio of LC/photocurable monomer in planar polyimide coated LC cell. Planar and tilted alignment were observed in LC/photocurable monomer mixture of 99.9:0.1 and 99.8:0.2(weight ratio), respectively, after UV irradiation for 20 minutes. Finally, it was found that vertical alignment was shown in weight ratio of over 99.7:0.3. Pretilt angle control could be ascribed to the surface wettability and surface morphology. This study contributes to the latest efforts to develop the method for continuous pretilt angle control. |
