Light activated shape memory polymers are relatively new kind of smart materials having diverse technological applications. Here, near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive shape memory polymers based on poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL)/polydopamine-coated halloysite nanotube (PDA-HNT) hybrid networks were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization of ɛ-caprolactone in the presence of PDA-HNT, followed by crosslinking with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). PDA-HNT nanoparticles were prepared by self-polymerization of dopamine on the HNT surface under weak alkaline solution. The PCL/PDA-HNT hybrid networks exhibit shape memory effect at room temperature on exposure to NIR light, indicating that polydopamine layer coated onto the HNT acted as NIR-triggered nanoheaters. Thermomechanical properties of the hybrid networks with different content of PDA-HNT were also examined by tensile testing, DMA and DSC. |
