The food industry is a large consumer of packaging materials with a variety of requirements to assure the safety and quality of packaged food. The primary purpose of packaging is to protect the product from the outside environment, such as the effects of gases, water(vapor), odors, micro-organisms, dust and etc. Among these effects, the oxygen gas is the most important factor. These effect has an adverse effect on food packaging such as deterioration and oxidation of the packaged food. Recently, the silica-coated polymers with mechanical flexibility, good barrier properties, and thermal stability can be used for the variety application. In this work, the PVA modified silica materials with various functional groups used to decrease the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and the oxygen transmission rate (OTR). The modified coating layer was prepared to reduce the oxygen affinity and the water affinity by interactions and cross-linking between PVA and silica |
