제목 Layer-by-Layer Deposition of Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Multilayers
초록 Nacres of abalone shells are known to have superior mechanical strength since it has a novel sandwiched structure containing CaCO3 blocks of 200 ~ 900 nm in thickness as a hard inorganic component combined with organic layers of 10 ~ 40 nm as a soft organic layer. Its laminated structure realizes approximately a two-fold increase in strength and a 1000-fold increase in toughness over its constituent materials.

In principle, this type of the sandwiched structure can also be realized with organosilicates as inorganic layers coupled with thin polymer layers. These [polymers/organosilicates]n hybrid multilayer films can be fabricated by the layer-by-layer (LBL) method employing intermolecular interactions such as electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. First, polymer thin layer was deposited by spin coating. Then, the copolymerized organosilicates were deposited onto polymer thin layer by the dip coating. After precuring of organosilicates, deposition of oraganic/inorganic layers was repeated. The prepared multilayered films were then cured for extended period of time. As inorganic layers, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and different kinds of moieties to improve adhesion properties between organic/inorganic interface, since adhesion properties are also important to improve mechanical strength such as crack resistance and fracture toughness of organic/inorganic hybrid multilayers. The molecular weight of such copolymer was controlled by changing reaction conditions to get an appropriate inorganic layer thickness. We also select polymers having strong interactions with residual functional groups of inorganic layer.

Fabricated hybrid multilayers were characterized with several tools. We investigated the internal structure of mutilayers by ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Mechanical properties were examined by microvickers indentation and depth sensing nanoindentation. As a result, it was proved that the inorganic/organic hybrid multilayers have ordered internal structures and show increases in mechanical properties compared with the single inorganic layer. The increases are caused by the synergy effects of both inorganic and organic components.
