A novel supramolcule (DAAS) was newly designed and synthesized for alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC). Chemical structures and purities of DAAS and its intermediates were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MALDI-ToF, and EA mass analysis. Without the conventional polymer-based liquid crystal (LC) alignment process, a DAAS was successfully applied as a robust photo-reversible LC alignment layer by self-assembly and photo-polymerization. The peculiar trans to cis and cis to trans photo-isomerization process of azobenzene group was very useful and attractive for electro-optical devices. Furthermore, once-formed crosslinked structure of photo-polymerized diacetylene group is stable enough to overcome strong thermal fluctuations of LC.
