Petroleum-based plastics were once regarded as an integral materials owing to its extensive applications and the convenience in its usage. However, the environmental damages caused by the petroleum products were easily overlooked. As a result, the cumulative plastic pollution in the soil, atmosphere, and marine ecosystems have become severe. To solve this problem, biodegradable polymer is now receiving attention in our everyday life. Despite the eco-friendliness, the commercial applications of the biodegradable polymers have been limited to a few industries due to the inferior mechanical properties. In this study, we fabricated the high performance biodegradable nanocomposites using poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) as a polymer matrix and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) as a reinforcing filler. The PBS/CNC nanocomposites with the CNC contents of 1-5wt% were prepared by dissolving or dispersing them in DMSO. |
