Biodegradable microspheres are widely used in various fields because they can deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients and continuously release them. However, the acidic byproducts produced by the degradation of polymer affect inflammation and cytotoxicity. Here, magnesium hydroxide (MH) was encapsulated in microspheres capping with ricinoleic acid (RA) for use as an acid neutralizing additive. The encapsulation efficiency of RA capped MH (RA-MH) was higher than that of the pristine MH. Furthermore, the microspheres containing RA-MH have excellent acid neutralization effect compared to the control. We have confirmed that the cytotoxicity of the microspheres containing RA-MH was improved by the acid neutralization, and the anti-inflammatory effect was also demonstrated by secreting the anti-inflammatory cytokines. As a result, we expect that microspheres containing RA-MH can be applied to drug delivery and tissue engineering for various diseases treatment. |
