Helical structures of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) possess photonic bandgaps, which are promising for structural coloration and photonic applications. To provide a stable format, the CLCs have been encapsulated by solid membranes. However, it still remains an important challenge to incorporate distinct CLCs into single capsules. Here, we design core-shell microcapsules containing left- and right handed CLCs by employing triple-emulsion drops. The triple-emulsion drops comprises a left handed CLC core, thin aqueous layer, and right-handed CLC shell. The complex drops are stabilized by polymerizing reactive mesogen in the CLC shell to yield stable photonic capsules. The CLCs isolated by the aqueous layer exhibit their own structural colors without a cross-talk, displaying mixed color. Moreover, the capsules can selectively show the color of either the core or shell according to selection of light-handedness. |
