Carbon foams are materials that have very high carbon content and noticeable void volume. One of the phenolic resins syntheses includes sol–gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde under alkaline conditions. Usually, the reaction results in methylene bridges between the resorcinol molecules with some hydroxymethyl groups. Lignin is the main byproduct of the pulp industry and presents both phenolic and aliphatic groups. And a Phenol-like compound (lignin) has enabled its utilization as a partial replacement for phenol in the synthesis of products with a variety of applications. In this work, lignin served as resorcinol substitute and PMMA particles as templates with mean diameter 4 ~ 8 μm contributed to the formation of macropores. A critical part of replacing relatively expensive resorcinol with lignin as an inexpensive, renewable, and abundant biopolymer is beneficial from both economic and environmental points of view. |
