Carbon fibers have been widely used in various industries because carbon fibers have excellent properties, such as tensile strength, modulus, chemical stability, electrical conductivity and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. One of the important process for carbon fibers production is stabilization, which has some disadvantages, such as high stabilization temperature and long time. To overcome these disadvantages, the pitch based carbon fibers are stabilized using electron beam (E-beam) irradiation and heat followed by carbonization. The obtained results show that the carbon fibers stabilized at low heat-treatment temperature after E-beam irradiation of 3000 KGy have 544 MPa and 70.22 GPa for tensile strength and young’s modulus, respectively. The E-beam have reduced stabilization time and temperature of pitch fibers, and the E-beam-treated carbon fibers show excellent tensile strength. |
