제목 Nematic Liquid Cryatals on the Chiral Self-Assembled Monolayer
초록 We studied the ordering behavior of liquid crystals on the chiral surface. We coated surfaces with 1,1-binaphtyl derivatives containing surface-reactive functional groups. (R) or (S) -2-binaphthol(BNOL) was reacted with 3-(triethoxysilyl)propylisocyanate to yield enantiomerically pure chiral molecules that are reactive to silica based substrates. The substrates were coated with the reactive binaphthyls by immersion into their toluene solutions followed by rinsing with toluene. Atomic force microscope was used to investigate the morphology of the chiral self-assembled monolayers(SAM). The structure of liquid crystal phases formed on the chiral surface was studied using polarized optical microscope as a function of temperature and applied electrical field. The effect of chiral excess in the binaphthyl SAM on the phase behavior of the liquid crystals was also investigated.
