Effective dispersion techniques of carbon-base polymer composite and its applications |

Carbon Nanotube (CNT) based polymer composites have great potential due to their high strength to weight ratio, flexibility and corrosion resistance. Consequently, they have been widely investigated for many practical applications including electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, microwave absorbing materials, electric heating element and photovoltaics. However, there are still challenges to the utilization of CNTs such as aggregation and bundling which lead to non-uniform dispersion. For large-scale processing and uniformity, it is desirable to ensure effective mixing and dispersion of the CNTs within the polymer. We report superior EMI shielding and dielectric properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites achieved through the use of high aspect ratio CNTs and three-roll milling. Highly entangled CNTs are separated and then evenly dispersed within the polymer matrix using three horizontally positioned rotating rolls that apply a strong shear force to the composite. |
