In this work, we developed highly pH-responsive fluorescent polymer was constructed for detection and imaging of bacteria. Zwitterionic fluorescent polymer was synthesized by conjugation of boron dipyrromethane (BODIPY) dye and bromoethane with poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) [BOD/BE-PSM]. The polymer interacted with bacterial membrane through electrostatic interactions between negative bacteria surfaces and positively charge detection. This phenomenon demonstrated the quenching effect caused by the hydrophilic-hydrophobic changes properties of the polymer in different pH levels, with a fixed polymer concentration. Quenching mechanism caused by BODIPY as a hydrophobic dye was also observed, showing its ability for bacteria detection, confirmed via photoluminescence and confocal images. Thus, this material showed its potential to be used as a bacterial sensor in different surrounding pH values. This work was supported by Korea National University of Transportation in 2018. |
