In this study, the epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and epoxidized castor oil (ECO) were synthesized by reaction of vegetable oil with peracid in the presence of Amberlite catalyst. The chemical structures of ESO and ECO were confirmed by means of FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The curing behaviors of ESO and ECO initiated by N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate as a thermal latent catalyst were investigated by using dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crosslinking density, glass transition temperature, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the cured samples were measured by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA). As a result, the cationic polymerization of ECO with thermal latent catalyst was initiated at lower temperature than that of ESO. Also, the cured ECO samples showed a higher glass transition temperature and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than those of ESO, which were probably due to the increased crosslinking density of the ECO samples.
