A high surface area-to-volume ratio in micro-channels increases the importance of surface interactions within them. In layered liquids, such as smectic liquid crystals, surface interactions play an important role in the formation of defect textures. In a confined system, contrary to the bulk, generated defects cannot grow freely. We use a semi-fluorinated material which has a stable and highly ordered smectic A liquid crystal (LC) phase due to rigid fluorinated moiety in the constituent molecules. In this study, we investigate the effect of surface geometry on morphology of LC by varying geometry of micro-channel. The used micro-channels are rectangular, triangle and trapezoid shaped. |
