Research on low-molecular-weight organogelators has been increased significantly during the past decade. Stimuli-responsive gelators have also been studied for their various applications. Azobenzene is one of the responsive molecules by trans-cis photoisomerization. However, azobenzene molecules in gels have a difficulty in changing their structures under photo-irradiation condition because of tightly packed aggregation. We synthesized a new azobenzene molecule that shows gel-to-sol and sol-to-gel reversible phase transition. This gelator consists of four amide moieties that can undergo hydrogen bonding and an azobenzene dendron that can undergo trans-cis transition. The minimum concentration was 0.07 wt % (0.6 mM) in cyclohexane at RT. We investigated the photoresponsiveness of a xylene gel using filtrated UV light, UV-Vis and FR-IR spectroscopy, and SEM. |
