Polybenzimidazole (PBI) has been synthesized under harsh condition in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and at elevated temperature, which hindered bulk production as well as membrane applications. Alternatively, precursor is introduced for two-step synthesis of PBI in organic solvent instead of strong acid at low temperature. PBI is obtained by thermal rearrangement of its precursor at about 350 oC for about 3 hours. Polymer structure and conversion are confirmed by thermal analysis and IR-spectra, and the gas permeation properties exhibited higher permselectivities compared to conventional PBIs. |
