제목 Application of high-valent iron and copper species in water tretment
초록 The catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by iron and copper produces high-valent metal species, likely Fe(IV) and Cu(III), respectively, under neutral pH conditions. These species are less reactive than hydroxyl radical, which is believed to be produced at acidic pH, but are advantageous to selective oxidation of organic contaminants in water. These high-valent metal species may also be useful for disinfection. However, little has been known about the reactivity of these oxidants with organic substrates and their efficacy on microbial inactivation. The mechanisms through which organic compounds are oxidized and pathogens are inactivated by high-valent metal species are not clearly understood. Our recent studies investigated the nature and reactivity of high-valent metal species produced by different Fenton (-like) systems, and assessed the potential of these oxidants for the oxidation of water contaminants and the inactivation of microorganisms.
