Silver nanoparticles (nano-Ags) have been shown to exert antimicrobial activity although the mechanism(s) of action have not been clearly established. In this study, the antifungal effects of nano-Ags and their mode of action were investigated. Nano-Ags showed antifungal effects on fungi with low hemolytic effects against human erythrocytes. To understand the mode of antifungal action of nano-Ags, the membrane studies and apoptosis assay with Candidaalbicansweredone.Theresultssuggestednano-Agsmightexertanantifungalactivitybydisruptingthestructureofthecellmembraneandpossessingapoptoticfeaturesincludingproductionofreactiveoxygenspecies,phosphatidylserineexternalization,DNAandnuclearfragmentation,andactivationofmetacaspases. Additionally, nano-Ags generated hydroxyl radicals and the formation of hydroxyl radical might be a cause of the synergistic effect. It was concluded that nano-Ags have potential as a therapeutic agent and adjuvant for treatment of bacterial infection. |
