Solubilization of Carbon Nanotubes and Nanofibers with Covalent Attachment of Hyperbranched Polymers |

Hyperbranched polymers (HBP) were grafted onto the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) or carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The overall evidence based on the data of elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy implicates that hyperbranched PEK’s were covalently attached to the surface of MWNTs and CNFs to form HBP-g-MWNT and HBP-g-CNF nanocomposites, respectively. Evidently driven by the molecular architecture of globular hyperbranched polymers, the morphology of the nanocomposites resembles “mushroom-like clusters on MWNT or CNF stalks.” The resultant nanocomposites were soluble in polar aprotic solvents stemming from numerous carboxylic acids on their surfaces. |
