Mussel shows excellent adhesion in an aqueous medium. This strong adhesion was mainly driven from the catecholic amino acid 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). In this study, a novel biomimetic bolaamphiphilic molecule containing catechol group at both ends was synthesized through conjugation of alkyl chain with L-dopa. The newly synthesized bolaamphiphilic molecule self-assembled in the pH-controlled aqueous solution, and display microtubular structure. Structure of the molecule and the mechanism of the self-assembly were investigated through various chemical and optical analysis methods. The microtubular structure showed enhanced affinity to the metal ions and produced inorganic-organic hybrid materials exploiting the reducing property of the catechol moiety. |
