Nafion-based Polymer Actuator Soaked with Ionic Liquids/Water Mixture |

Recently, ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) soaked with the ionic liquids (ILs) has been considerable attentions for one of the most promising actuator with the increased air-operating stability. But almost all the IPMCs/ILs are not efficiently actuated, since physical properties of pure ILs in ionic polymer matrix (such as ionic conductivity and viscosity) are relatively poor compared with that of water. The present study is intended to prepare the effective Nafion-based IPMC with both increased air-operating capability and stability by using binary mixture of hydrophilic ionic liquids/water. Also, we observed effects of the physical properties of ILs (pure and mixture) on membrane properties as definitely factors affecting actuation performance. Experimental results show that electro-active deformations are dependant on ion-ion interaction of bounded solvent in the Nafion matrix. |
