In this talk, the speaker first briefly discusses the scaling laws to understand microscale phenomena. Then, the microfabrication technologies for lab on a chip (LOC) are reviewed relevant to polymer micro/nano molding. As an example of biomedical applications of microfluidic LOC, the speaker will introduce a low-cost disposable microfluidic LOC for blood typing, which requires very small sample blood volume of the order of 1 ul. The present LOC fully integrates four microfluidic components, i.e., flow splitting microchannel, serpentine laminating chaotic micromixer, reaction microchamber and detection microfilter, on a “single” polymer chip. The designed LOC is cost-effectively realized by means of a polymer microinjection molding and the subsequent thermal bonding process in mass production. And also, successful blood typing results of human blood groups of A, B and AB via the fabricated LOC will be discussed. Finally, overviews of the speaker’s recent research achievements with regard to clinical diagnosis and therapy with the help of microfluidic LOC will be briefly introduced in this talk. |
