We report a single step approach for fabricating cellulose microparticles. The strategy includes the following steps. CO2 bubbles are generated in a microchannel and a minute amount of CO2 gases dissolve in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide containing cellulose (Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose phthalate, HP55). The dissolution of CO2 gas leads to the decrease in pH value of the aqueous solution in the vicinity of the gas-liquid interface. This increase in the acidity of the solution results in the regeneration of HP55, of which solubility is dependent on the pH values. The proposed approach for the production of cellulose microparticles is simple, fast, and environmentally-friendly compared to the previous methods. |
