We have developed adhesive catechol-conjugated chitosan (CHI-C) patches for oral applications. We identified three steps of adhesion of these patches onto mucosal surfaces of the oral cavity: 1) immediate dissolution of CHI-C patches in the water existed in mucous layers, 2) and then rapid intercalation and interaction between CHI-C-mucin, 3) and salivary-induced covalent crosslinking to achieve long-term maintenance within the oral cavity. This study demonstrates the adhesive platforms using catechol-conjugated chitosan patches (CHI-C), which show the strong mucosal layer attachments by forming instant complexation of CHI-C and mucin. Thus, we expect that CHI-C patches can be a new platform for an efficient drug delivery system in the oral cavity. |
