Hierarchically and Spontaneously Formed Wrinkling on Interdiffusional Polyelectrolyte Multilayers via Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles |

We introduce a novel and robust means of surface wrinkling on polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) for hierarchically structured surface through formation of stiff layer atop interdiffusional PEMs via synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs) as the role of nanoreactor. A characteristic wavelength and amplitude of wrinkling emerges on the surface of a thin and stiff film, which underwent planar compression through the expanded volume of crosslinked PEMs caused by control of penetration depth of silver NPs inside PEMs depending on the thickness of top layer inside PEMs and pH of reducing agent. Furthermore structure of wrinkled surface can be developed to highly hierarchical structure with increasing the number of reduction for synthesis of silver NPs. Finally a facile surface modification method based on hierarchically wrinkled surface can be applied for various application such as antisticking, anti-contamination, and self cleaning surface. |
