Poly L-lactic acid(PLLA) is a biodegradable polymer that it has been commonly used as a biomaterial. However, it is difficult for PLLA to apply specific sites in which implants need high strength because it has low strength. Therefore, the aim of this study is to strengthen PLLA monofilaments using solid-state drawing in order to widen its application such as stents. To achieve this goal, we designed the solid-state drawing machine and PLLA monofilaments were drawn with the various condition by drawing machine. Then, we measured tensile strength of drawn filaments and optimized drawing conditions showing maximum strength. From the GADDS and SEM images, we confirmed that the molecular chain of monofilaments was oriented uni-directionally by drawing process. In addition, surface of the drawn monofilaments were smoothed. Consequently, it was considered that the solid-state drawing process could strengthen and smooth the PLLA monofilaments through changing the molecular chain orientation. |
