제목 Synthesis and LC-Aligning Properties of New Polyimides with Various Side Chain
초록 Although many investigations on the mechanisms for generation of pretilt angles on the rubbed polymer surfaces have been undertaken, no definitive understanding so far has been elucidated and hence the relationships between the surface structure of rubbed films and the tilted orientation behaviors of LCs are not predictable. A few publications investigated the influence of mesogen units contained in the side chains. Peak et. al. reported the non-polar side chains of polyimides with layer structure provide relatively large pretilt angles while polar side chains gave small values due to the microscopic molecular reorientation of a polymer surface induced by rubbing.
In this study, new aromatic polyimides containing 4-cyanobiphenyl unit in side chain or only alkyl spacer, were synthesized and characterized and their controllability of LC alignment on rubbed surfaces were investigated. The mesogenic 4-cyanobiphenyl group was selected in an attempt to observe the effect of an enhanced van der waals interaction between the mesogen group of side chain and the LC molecules (5CB).
