Fibroin, one of the silk proteins, has recently been identified as a protein with diverse functionality. We investigated the effect of irradiation doses on antioxidant, whitening, skin moisturizing factors by irradiating gamma rays to fibroin. The radical scavenging activity of ABTS was the highest at 25kGy, compared to the non-irradiated fibroin. Melanin production did not show any significant difference depending on irradiation doses, but showed about 55% reduction in the 40kGy irradiated fibroin. Next, we examined the expression of AQP-3 and HAS, known as skin moisturizing factors. AQP-3 showed a tendency to decrease slightly depending on irradiation doses, whereas HAS expression was higher in fibroin with 10kGy and 20kGy compared to the non-irradiated fibroin, and no difference was observed with 20kGy more. Therefore, we expect to be able to develop more functional materials by irradiating gamma rays to fibroin, which improved skin moisturizing and antioxidant activity. |
