Sericin is a minor protein of silk protein and has unusual high content of serine and threonine. We previously found that sericin can directly synthesize silica from TEOS(tetraethyleneorthosilicate) without any pretreatment. This is similar to silicatein from marine sponges, which was known as a catalytic enzyme during biosilicification. We expect that sericin can be another alternative of silicatein. To find the role of sericin on the silica synthesis, we extracted sericin through different extraction method, e.g. hot water, ethanol preicipitation, and urea/mercaptoethanol. Sericin/silica composite was successfully synthesized in presence of any sericin. Silica particles had diverse morphologies by the molecular weight distribution of sericin after sintering the sericin/silica composite. We examined the effective fraction of sericin for the synthesis of silica and its morphology was characterized. |
