This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics on generating smoke of building interior materials that are the leading cause of fire deaths. Smoke production properties were measured by using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-2) with four kinds of softwood. The external heat flux was maintained at 25 kW/m2 or 50 kW/m2. Total smoke release increased from 1.57 to 2.70 times. Red pine was the largest, 1044.6 m2/m2 and the spruce was the smallest, 525.2 m2/m2. The total smoke production of all the specimens increased from 2.03 to 3.29 times, the spruce was the largest, and lauan was the smallest. The peak smoke production release increased to 1.63 ~ 2.06 times, the spruce increased the most and the red pine increased the lowest. The specimens with the lowest smoke generation at 50 kW/m2 were 4.6 m2 in spruce and the once with the highest were 9.2 m2 in red pine. |
