Membrane can be used for the biosugar purification1,2. It is well-known that pretreatment of lignocellulose by thermo-chemical method can produce oligomeric sugars. However, various by-products of fermentation inhibitory compounds can also be released. Removing the inhibitors prior to fermentation would be necessary. Among many processes to remove the inhibitors such as evaporation, solvent extraction, chromatography, and adsorption, membrane technology can be chosen because of its many advantages of lower manufacturing costs, smaller equipment size and higher energy efficiency. In this study, membrane technology was applied for separation and purification of biosugar. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) and spiral wound reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were used. The UF membrane was fabricated for protein removal. The membrane showed better anti-fouling property than other membranes due to its hydrophilic surface and ridge-and-valley surface structure. Combination of UF and RO resulted in concentrating biosugar up to 20 wt%. |
