제목 Polymer Blend Membrane for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell
초록 Methanol crossover through the electrolyte membrane was one of the significant cause lowering the performance in DMFC. Poly(arylene ether ketone) shows lower methanol permeability than Nafion and good chemical and mechanical stability. To reduce the methanol crossover, Nafion membranes was modified by the solution blend with sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone). To improve miscibility between the blend materials, Nafion was substituted by sPAEK (IEC=1.7-1.8). The cross-sections of composite membranes showed phase separated morphology. The morphology and the phase separation mechanism could be controlled by varying the blend ratio and the degree of sulfonation of polymers. These complex morphologies can be applied for reducing methanol crossover. The methanol permeability of blend membrane was much lower than that of Nafion because sulfonated aryl polymers acted on methanol barrier. The proton conductivity showed same trend with methanol permeability.
