Oxidation and oxidative methylation of HMF to polymer precursors over resin supported Au/Pd nano-particles |

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and furan-2,5-dimethylcarboxylate (FDMC) are found to be the renewable feedstock chemicals obtained from biomass for the replacement of terepthalic acid. The selective oxidation of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) leads to FDCA, which is not completely soluble in many organic solvents and water, so recent results revealed that FDCA was produced as disodium salt in water solvent using excess base and noble metal catalysts. Further FDMC was produced by the oxidative methylation of HMF in methanol solvent using gold containing catalyst. The synthesis of such noble metal supported catalysts synthesis always complex synthetic procedures which usually very difficult to reproduce in bulk quantities during industrial production. Herein we have synthesized commercially available resin supported Au/Pd catalysts by simple methods and such catalysts were used for both oxidation as well as oxidative methylation of HMF. Relatively high conversion and selectivity was obtained as compared to reported literature. |
