Non-spherical colloids were prepared by dynamically swelling spherical particles with oil and subsequent internal phase separation process. As seed particles, polystyrene particles with low molecular weight were prepared by dispersion polymerization and re-dispersed in the mixture of water and alchohol with stabilizer. At relatively high temperature, decane became soluble in water and alchohol so that it could diffuse through the dispersion medium into polymeric particles. Thereby, polymers was dissolved in decane or well mixed together. Then, by cooling down the suspension, decane was isolated inside particles and separated from polymers inside particles, in which nonspherical particles with various morphologies were produced. |
