Preparation of Biocompatible Zwitterionic PEG Grafted on Modified Nitinol-DLC Surface |

Blood-compatible biomaterials have been of importance for a variety of medical applications. We have tested a Nitinol-DLC whose surface was grafted with zwitterionic PEG, with the aim of development of peripheral arterial stent. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is blood-compatible and sulfobetaine (-N+-SO3-), a zwitterionic polymer, is biocompatible as well. In this study, synthesized zwitterionic PEG was grafted on the Nitinol-DLC using an oxidation treatment. When the surface property and blood compatibility of surface-modified Nitinol-DLC was examined, the results showed that both contact angle and ratio of oxygen to carbon significantly decreased with the PEG-grafted Nitinol-DLC. The total amount of albumin adsorbed onto the TiNi-DLC-PEG2K-N+-S- was lower than that of TiNi-DLC control. The present study suggested that grafted zwitterionic PEG structure may possess an improved blood compatibility. |
