The scaffold should be biocompatible, biodegradable, highly porous with a large surface/volume ratio, mechanically strong and processing into desired shape. Chitin is the second most abundant natural polymer and has already been reported to be suitable for biomedical applications such as sutures, controlled release of drugs and wound dressings. We used biodegradable β-chitin as materials for scaffolds. Instead of synthetic polymers, non-water soluble and biodegradable β-chitin was used. Also, solvent casting-salt leaching method was manufactured for making porous sponges in the similar way of PLA and PGA. The sponge coated with collagen improved the cell attachment into the surface of scaffold.
