Synthesis and Characterization of Phenylethyl Acrylate/Methacrylate Copolymers Useful for Intraocular Lens |

Copolymers of phenyl alkyl acrylates/methacrylates are clinically used as soft materials for foldable intraocular lens (IOL) to treat cataract. In this study, homopolymers and copolymers of 2-Phenylethyl acrylate (PEA) and 2-Phenylethyl methacrylate (PEMA) of different compositions were prepared by free radical polymerization. The compositions of the copolymers were determined by 1H-NMR analysis. The reactivity ratios of the monomers at the copolymerization were calculated by the conventional Fineman-Ross or Kelen-Tudos method. The reactivity ratio of PEA (r1) and PEMA (r2) were estimated as 0.30 and 2.17, respectively. The glass transition temperature of the homopolymers and copolymers were measured by DSC and optical refractive index of them were by using ABBE-3L refractometer to investigate a proper copolymer composition for foldable intraocular lens. |
