Cancer chemotherapy is efficient at killing fast-growing cancer cells. However, it follows unexpected side effects to normal cells because of lower targeting ability. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a proved light-responsive therapeutic method as a selective cancer treatment. Photosensitizer (PS), essential agent for PDT, triggers reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induces cell apoptosis and necrosis under laser irradiation. To treat cancer locally, competent drug delivery system was introduced using anticancer drug loaded photo-responsive micelles. Micelles were composed of ROS generatable PS and lipoic acid (LA) which is ROS scavenger. And then, we confirmed photo-regulated drug release, cellular uptake and cytotoxicity. Also, we investigated feasibility on tumor growth inhibition through in vivo study. Herein, we demonstrated the synergistic effect of chemotherapy and PDT with minimal adverse effects. |
