Modification of Radiation-grafted Ion-exchange Membrane with In-situ Polymerization for Biomimetic Actuator |

Recently, ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) is highlighted as biomimetic actuator due to high actuation performance and low input voltage, however, because of the limitation in reprocessability of ion-exchange membrane (commercial Nafion), it has problems in controlling membrane properties which is critical in governing actuation performance. In this study, we prepared IPMC based on poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) grafted with poly(styrenesulfonate) having controlled ion-exchange capacity. The produced membrane was then modified by in-situ polymerization with polypyrrole to achieve higher performance compared to IPMC fabricated from Nafion. The modified membrane was characterized with back titration, SEM, EDS and ionic conductivity. We demonstrated that the experimental results will lead the possibilities of improvement in actuation. |
