Polycarbonate (PC) and polystyrene (PS) are being widely used for packagings, electronics and automotives. PS has many advantages such as the good processability and high thermal stability while mechanical properties of PS are weak. Bis-phenol A PC (BPA PC) is an engineering plastic with high mechanical properties and heat resistance while the processability is poor. Blends of PS and BPA PC are known to be immiscible in general. Poly(phenylene oxide) and polycarprolactone were reported to be miscible with PS and BPA PC respectively. In this study, a polyurethane elastomers prepared from polyol mixtures of polyphnylene oxide diol and polycarprolactone, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and 1,4-buthane diol were studied as a compatibilizer of BPA PC and PS. Effects of the PU elastomers on the thermal and mechanical properties of PS/BPA PC blends were studied experimentally. It is postulated that the PU elastomer played the role of an excellent compatibilizer for PS/BPA PC blends. |
