Ecotoxicological Effects and Biodegradability of Ionic Liquids Associated with Imidazolium and Pyridinium Cations |

The toxic effects of imidazolium- and pyridinium-based ionic liquids towards green alga Selenastrum capricornutum were investigated. For better understanding the environmental fate of these compounds, biodegradation tests using microorganisms from activated sludge were also performed. Based on the data obtained, [BMIM][Br] was more toxic with EC50 value of 2138 µM compared to 4677 µM in the case of [BMPy][Br]. As far as the biodegradability of ionic liquids was concerned, the results revealed that imidazolium and pyridinium salts were metabolized through the sequential oxidization in different positions of the alkyl side chains. |
