We synthesized new sequence-specific polymers of necleobase-styrene and N-functionalized maleimide. Alternating polymerization of these two monomers yielded polymers equipped necleobases and solubilizing groups that alternate with each other along the polymer backbone. Successive polymerization of two different nucleobase-styrenes in the presence of an excess amount of N-functionalized maleimide allowed us to synthesize polymers possessing a gradient of nucleobases along the polymer backbone. Due to the complimentary hydrogen bonding between nucleobases, two block copolymers having a complementary sequence of nucleobases showed a duplex formation in solution. Amphiphilic forms of these block copolymers were synthesized by using PEG- and dendritic PEG-chain transfer agents under the RAFT condition. Depending on the sequence of nucleobases, the duplex formation of two amphiphilic block copolymers yielded a dumbbell-shape or flower-like structures. |
